Today, the United States House of Representatives voted on H.R. 315, Improving Access to Maternity Care Act, which will increase the availability of maternity care services to populations in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). The bill passed by a vote of 405 to 0 (28 No Votes). Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) issued the following statement:

“Access to quality maternity care is essential for the well-being of mother and baby. This legislation would provide a common-sense solution to the current shortage we are seeing in certain areas around the country.”

H.R. 315 will empower the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to identify areas that are facing a shortage of maternity health care providers and deploy doctors, nurses or other medical professionals to these areas. These professionals will receive scholarships and repayment of their student loans for serving in these HPSAs.
