Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, from President Barack Obama to President Donald Trump, have stated that illegal immigrants should not have access to premium assistance or tax credits for health insurance. I have great sympathy for those who seek to better their lives, but if you chose to enter this country, it must be done legally. For this reason, I voted for the Verify First Act, to ensure that those receiving valuable premium support or health care tax credits, are lawfully present in the United States.
S.1094 - Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act
This week the House passed S. 1094, the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017, sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). This bill institutes many reforms at the VA, and gives the department’s secretary the power to expeditiously fire, demote, and suspend VA employees based upon their misconduct. This bill also includes many whistleblower protections for VA employees, so as to guarantee that this law cannot be used to unjustly target any employee. I was proud to vote in favor of this important bill, which will help to guarantee that our nation’s veterans continue to receive top notch care through the VA system.
When a family member loses their job it is often a trying time both emotionally and financially. COBRA is a safety net that allows workers and their families to continue with their employer sponsored insurance plan separate from their former employer. I voted this week to extend tax credits, as passed in the AHCA, to those who seek health insurance coverage through COBRA. I was proud to support this legislation that will help families through tough times and better facilitate the environment for job-seekers to get back on their feet.
