Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) today applauded the announcement of a $53,334 grant award to the Speigletown District Volunteer Fire Company through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) FY2016 Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program.

“This grant will allow our brave first responders of the Speigletown Fire Company to more efficiently and effectively fight fires in their community, and keep safe while doing it. The adapters purchased from the grant money streamline the process of getting hoses connected to a hydrant, saving precious minutes, and often saving lives,” said Faso.

Before the distribution of this grant award, the Speigletown District Volunteer Fire Company would need to use multiple adapters to connect hoses to a water source, such as a fire hydrant. The funds obtained from this award will go toward the purchase and installation of permanent, quick-lock hoses that will aid in significantly cutting down the time it takes for first responders to get water on a fire. The new adapters will be used throughout the area served by the Speigletown District Volunteer Fire Company.

Speigletown Fire Chief William Maloney articulated the importance of this grant award: “This grant helped us to obtain new and updated equipment to support our men and women who risk their lives every day to keep our community safe. Specifically, the funds obtained from this grant allow us to make quicker connections to reliable water sources enabling our firefighters to attach hoses and put out fires quickly and effectively.”

Funding is part of round 6 of the competitive Fiscal Year 2016 announcements. For more on the grants, visit the AFG website: www.fema.gov/firegrants.
