Legislative Corner

Working Towards Tax Reform that Benefits Upstate New York Families and Small Businesses

On Thursday, I voted against the Senate's budget proposal because of language in the resolution which proposed the elimination of the state and local tax deduction. While there were many positives in this proposal, my number one priority is ensuring that individuals and families in Upstate New York are protected.

I do, however, remain committed to the belief that we need comprehensive tax reform to benefit Upstate New York families and increase economic growth. We must provide middle class tax relief and lower the burdens on job-creating small businesses. I will continue to work with the administration, congressional leadership, and members of both parties to reform our tax code in a manner that works for middle class families in Upstate New York and will allow our economy to grow.

Tightening Up Sanctions on Iran

This week the House voted in an overwhelmingly bipartisan manner to tighten up sanctions on Iran. The Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enforcement Act dictates that it should be the policy of the United States to prevent a nuclear Iran. The sanctions included in the legislation can be found below.

The President shall impose sanctions against:

  • Iranian government agencies involved in ballistic missile development;
  • Foreign entities that supply material for, or otherwise facilitate or finance, such efforts;
  • Foreign persons or foreign government agencies that import, export, or re-export prohibited arms or related material to or from Iran; and (4) foreign persons or entities that transfer goods or technologies contributing to Iran's ability to acquire or develop ballistic missiles, including launch technology, and destabilizing numbers and types of advanced conventional weapons.

Fighting the Opioid Epidemic

In Response to the New Opioid Crisis Designation

On Thursday, President Trump declared our nation’s opioid crisis a "Public Health Emergency." Opioid abuse is a genuine epidemic. I am pleased that the President made this an important priority. This national crisis has impacted every community. I have spoken with too many individuals around our district who have relayed a story about a friend or relative that succumbed to addiction, or worse. I will continue to advocate for more assistance and resources to help our local communities win this battle.

Earlier this month, I testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee about how the opioid crisis is destroying families and communities in New York’s 19th District. Seated next to me is Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL). View my remarks here, or by clicking the image below.
